Do as I say, not as I do

Dirty little freelance secret #117: Despite my singing the praises of Take Back Your Time day, I began the workday at three freaking a.m. today. Really. Because I had a backlog of work, and because, well, clearly I have a little problem with working too dang much. So off I go to nap, and then spend the evening reading page proofs of my book for the umpteenth time. It will be nice when it’s off to the printer next month. And tomorrow I will take my leisurely time with the dog, meals, and boyfriend. Really. (Ask me how it went on Thursday.)

hhhmmm…. So how is your schedule better than my daily 8-5 grind at the office? Sure I fight traffic 45 minutes each way, but I do know when my day will begin and end, and I do leave work behind when I step out of the office. No computer, files, or reading for me as I settle in for some family time and TV after dinner!

always with the great questions! i could write a book on this. wait, maybe i have? i’ll try to make this quick: (1) i don’t think self-employment is better for all than 8 to 5 work. it’s just better for me. every person must look at the pros and cons and decide for themselves. for me, working a few long days in a row is worth not having to commute 1.5 hours a day, but it may not be for you. and you know, sometimes i wish i worked for a company so i could just goof off when tired… like now… (2) sometimes, despite the best planning/efforts, freelancers still get inundated with too many deadlines at once. welcome to my week. however, i plan to take it easy the next few days to make up for it. again, welcome to the ebbs and flows of freelance life. (3) right now i’m kind of working a job and a half: full-time freelance work + misc production/publicity odds and ends on my book. welcome to the creative life, which sadly often doesn’t pay enough to sustain itself without some form of backup income. i’ve tried not being a writer, but it just doesn’t work for me. i hope i’ve answered your question. keep ‘em coming… m.

[...] Case in point. Check out this post from Michelle Goodman’s blog for the Anti 9 to 5 Guide. Read a little. Laugh a little. But more importantly, check out the times of her posts. (Okay, they’re not actually listed, but I got an email from her at four freakin’ a.m. the other day!) This woman is HOOK’D! [...]
