[...] What a timely question! As I hinted at a while back, I’m doing one of these short-term contracts at A Big Corporation now (though the gig is part time, ultra-flex, heavy on telecommuting, and due to end in a matter of weeks). I’m happy to weigh the pros and cons of working for the man, however noncommittally, here. [...]

I think people are put off by the temping tests and the fact that it's sometimes hard to get a call back. I prefer the longer-range temp gigs (aka contract work), say one to twelve months. You still have to take tests, interview, and chase down elusive agency reps, but once you get a gig, the steady pay is nice to have (and depending on your field/experience level, can be lucrative), and there can be the opportunity for real live bennies.

As for Guru, I've never been a fan of those "bid on a project you know nothing about, and compete against profressionals throughout the world!" sites, but maybe they've improved over the years. (I just think there are better ways to find work, like through your own network.) If anyone's has good experiences with these sites, please share with the group.

[Somewhat irrelevant: I did write a pile of "how to freealance" articles for the early incarnations of Guru, techies.com (maybe now dead?), and ICplanet.com (now dead), back in the 90s dotcom heyday... those sites were exciting back then. But now we have blogs and LinkedIn and MediaBistro and Google...]

Temping gets a bad name, don't you think? I've found some of my best jobs that way (HR Analyst from an Exec Asst temp job, HR recruiter from an HR Admin). Sure, they pay crap with no benefits, but are excellent for keeping food on the table short-term while you are re-creating your work life.

I live by this blog btw. I've got my own and am offering blogging/BASIC BASIC website services to my friends as a way to get foot out the door.

You might also highlight guru.com. I haven't had any luck yet but seems legit.
