STEPPING UP TO POWER: THE POLITICAL JOURNEY OF AMERICAN WOMEN, by Harriet Woods.

I was greatly impressed by meeting former Missouri 2-time senator and Lt. Governor, Harriet Woods, at the Women and Journalism Symposium held in Montana in September 2002. I was even more impressed by her semi-autobiographical account of women in public office entitled _Stepping up to Power: The Political Journey of American Women, 8 Steps to Gain Political Power_ (c. 2001: Westview Press), where she chronicles detailed insider political struggles within powerful political circles in D.C., along with history and commentary about political challenges within women's organizing nationwide. Required reading for women from any walk of life who want to escape a life-sentence of the 9-5 life while working towards achieving a better life for all. Harriet passed away this year of leukemia, after a life as a wife and mother of three who became a pivotal figure in the progress of American women in public life.
