For your book (break a leg!) I'd REALLY like to know

-- how to negotiate a fee. I too often fold out of fear that the editor will say, FU, I don't need the hassle and can fill my space more cheaply.

-- how to ensure the editor will not edit my piece (beyond any obviously unintended typo or lack of subject-predicate agreement due to my own revisions). I'm a highly credentialed editor, copyeditor and writer with national exposure in top- flight places but none of that forestalls some asshole tampering with my humor pieces which of course rely on tight writing and on-purpose word magic for wit.

Thanks mucho! Love your stuff!
