i have been using WriteRoom for mac for about a month. i love it. there is, at least for me, the inevitable c/p into a bona fide word processor as i complete a piece, but i now have the luxury of treating MS Word like a post-production tool instead of an indispensable multi-function swiss army-thingy. if you enjoy a big black screen with retro-green words dominating your document like it was the DOS era, this is your program.

i wouldn't necessarily recommend this software for lovers of the tactile satisfaction offered by typewriters. my wife loves her half-century-old Royal typewriter, but does not get from WriteRoom quite the same encouragement to romanticize her little creative process. she loves her coffee, click-clack and ribbon. just an example - ymmv.

I really like Scrivener for projects like novels, articles and translations. You can collect all your material and then work with multiple views or even an old school full screen a bit like Hogbay's app.

Personally, I think if you're going to make it as a freelance wordsmith you have to juggle and promote all your skills. And no matter what anyone says, you work very hard for every single cent.
