Although I free-lance in a different field one thing that has helped me is to constantly network. I always contact some of my contracts with little teasers of what I have done or tips for their market. Ever little bit helps:-)

Great post ! I think diversifying your target markets is good advice. For my writing business, Write on Time Solutions, I definitely plan to break into new markets. I think you have to watch trends and be willing to change if necessary to stay alive as a business.
