Reminder: Seattle freelancing Q&A and book reading tonight (1/15)

January 15th, 2009

Happy new year, my fellow cubicle haters. I hope your year’s off to a glorious start.

Not only is January 15 tax day for freelancers, it’s the date of my first Seattle-area event of the year. At tonight’s bookstore soiree, I’ll answer questions about freelancing through this blasted recession and read a few snippets from My So-Called Freelance Life. Whether you’re indie-curious or a seasoned freelancer who hasn’t left the house in three days, tonight will be a splendid opportunity to meet other independent pros who changed their underwear today. The event particulars:

When: 7:00 pm, Thursday, January 15
Where: Third Place Books, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park (North Seattle)
Free, open to the public, kids welcome, etc.

If you make it, be sure to say hello. If you’re not in Seattle or can’t make it tonight, check out the other shindigs listed on my events page, including a couple of virtual talks and my upcoming San Francisco reading, which I am ever so excited about. And if you want some freelancing tips right now, try these popular posts on for size:

General question, why the focus only on women? The advice I’ve heard is applicable regardless of sex. Why alienate the majority of the workforce and remove them as potential customers?

Hi David, the “for women” thing is my publisher’s niche, but I wrote this book for men and women (I don’t control all the marketing copy they put out about the book, though I tried). I’ve always said that men can benefit from my books and events too (and many have). Here’s a more specific answer to this question.

I wish I had looked up this blog a week ago! It would have been fun to attend your event. I just finished reading your book on freelancing today. :D I am 33 and studying painting and drawing at UW, and trying to figure out where to intern this summer (and staring at my graduation date in 2010 with a mixture of wonder and horror). Reading your book has really helped me stop hyperventilating at my fear of re-joining the world of work. I’m afraid that if I get a job I’ll get sucked back into this horribly boring world and be trapped for the rest of my life. Freelancing sounds so much better…and less mystical and more DO-able after reading your book. There was so much in there I really relate to and made me feel so relieved that I’m not alone. I’m subscribing to your blog so I can keep an eye on what’s going on…and plan on checking out a lot of the resources in your book. Thank you so much! <3

Meia, welcome! Nice to see you here. So glad you’ve gotten so much out of the book. Hopefully we will meet a future event.
